Most of us, at some point or other, run into the problem of what to give that certain someone for a special occasion or to say “I love you” or “I like you” or just “I was thinking about you”.

A little imagination can go a long way, and it doesn’t have to take your entire weeks wages with it. What you spend on a gift will depend, of course, on your own finances and how much of them you want to invest in your expression of affection.

Probably the simplest and most convenient way to give anyone a present is the ubiquitous gift card. It is safe to say that there are very few establishments with anything to sell, whether goods or services, that won’t be happy to provide you with a gift certificate in whatever amount you wish.

There’s an old traditional notion that giving money is inelegant or downright shabby – implying that the giver didn’t care enough to search out just the right objet d’art or gizmo that the recipient ‘always wanted’. This is patently untrue! Maybe not everyone, but most folks would love to get the perfect incentive to go shopping in their favorite store, at no cost.

If you can’t figure out the favorite shopping place, think about what that person enjoys, from a weekend away to old movies. You are sure to find a place they’d love to browse. (Another large advantage: a gift card can save the giver a lot of time and postage)

If you’re lucky enough to afford extravagance, your options are limitless. What about a trampoline for the athletic soul and body, or an aboveground swimming pool, for someone with plenty of space in the back yard? Seriously though, if you do care about the person receiving your gift, you will consider the long-term consequences, and the other people who may have to live with it too.

The high street retailer Debenhams launched a new product line referred to as the first ‘divorce gift list’ in the UK for couples that plan on celebrating their impending divorce.

The service which started today follows the trend of recent congratulation greeting cards and parties for those who have been granted a divorce popularized by celebrities such as Heather Mills and Jordan.

While it may not seem that divorce should be a cause for celebration, it is possible that with divorce on the rise it could become the new equivalent for the more conventional wedding list.

This is due to the fact that now it is very common for couples to live together before marriage, which means they tend to already have the basic goods that wedding lists were created to provide.

On the other hand, divorce forces partners to split their marital possessions or for one partner to leave the home entirely which means they now have to fill a new house will all of the basics.

High on the list for divorcee gifts are expected to be items such as computer games, plasma screen TVs, and non-iron shirts to help them on their way to recovery and get reacquainted with the single life.

Commonly across the UK the first day after Christmas holiday is thought to be the main time that couples decide to leave each other, which is also the period when the largest amount of divorce petitions are filed.

Head of Retail Services for Debenhams, Peter Moore, stated that divorce is a costly time for most people and registering for a Divorce Gift List gives family and friends a chance to help out the new divorcee.
